Why Healthy Lawns Matter

Basics of Irrigation save

Maintaining your lawn in an environmentally sensible way enhances its appearance and provides many environmental benefits

Did you know that maintaining a healthy lawn is good for the environment and your community? Healthy grass produces oxygen, traps contaminants from rain and the air, and provides a feeding ground for birds and other small fauna.

As with all other living plants, your lawn absorbs carbon dioxide and releases life sustaining oxygen into the environment. This process of trapping the carbon dioxide is also critical to maintaining air temperatures as well as too much CO2 leads to increased temperature.

Your lawn is also a habitat and feeding ground for local fauna. A healthy lawn will attract a variety of birds that rely on your grass to feed themselves and their families. Small insects that take up residence in your lawn provide a sustainable supply of food for these birds. As some natural habitats are being removed, your lawn can provide a welcome rest stop for feathered friends.

A well maintained lawn helps to prevent soil erosion as well. The thick grass serves as a barrier to keep healthy, nutrient-rich soil from eroding away. The root structure of the grass keeps your soil loose and porous so rain can soak into it and reach groundwater resources. An unmaintained lawn becomes compacted which prevents rainwater from soaking in. This can be especially problematic for areas that rely on groundwater resources for drinking water.

A well maintained lawn looks wonderful and is a welcoming place to gather with friends and family. But never forget that by keeping your lawn green and lush, you’re also having a positive impact on your local environment. And that is a breath of fresh air!
