Separate Grass Zones From Garden Bed Zones

 

This is the most important principle in front yard irrigation planning: never mix grass and garden beds in the same zone. Turf and ornamental plantings require different amounts of water, delivered in different ways, on different schedules. Grass benefits from overhead spray distributed evenly across the entire surface. Garden beds benefit from low volume water delivered directly to the root zone, where it does the most good without encouraging weeds or saturating mulch.

 

If you water them together, you are forced to compromise. Run the zone long enough for the grass and you are overwatering the beds. Run it short enough for the beds and the turf edges dry out. Separate zones eliminate the compromise entirely.

 

Plan one zone, or more if your lawn area is large, for turf only. Plan at least one separate zone for your garden beds using drip irrigation. The result is a system where every plant gets exactly what it needs, nothing more and nothing less.

Design Your Lawn Zone Using Spray Heads or Rotors

 

For the grass portion of your front yard, the right head type depends on the size and shape of your lawn.

A south facing garden bed in full afternoon sun will dry out faster than a north facing bed that stays shaded through the hottest part of the day. Grouping them in the same zone means you are setting a single run time and schedule for two areas with very different conditions. Separate zones let you run the sunny bed more frequently and the shaded bed less, saving water and keeping plants healthier.

 

Similarly, if you have a mix of drought tolerant plants in one part of your front yard and thirsty roses or hydrangeas in another, they belong in separate zones. Drought tolerant plants can often get by on a once or twice a week schedule, while heavy drinkers may need water every other day during peak summer heat. Separate zones give you that control.
