How to Know Where to Place Sprinkler Heads in Your Yard
One of the most common irrigation mistakes homeowners make is not getting the placement wrong, it is not thinking about placement at all. Sprinkler heads dropped in without a plan leave dry patches in the middle of the lawn, soggy edges along fences, and water hitting driveways and sidewalks instead of soil. Getting placement right from the start is the single biggest factor in how well your system performs and how long your lawn stays healthy.
Here is how to think through it the right way.
Understand the Concept of Head to Head Coverage First
Before you put a single head in the ground, you need to understand the principle that governs all sprinkler placement: head to head coverage. This means each sprinkler head should throw water far enough to reach the next head in the layout. The spray radius of each head overlaps with its neighbors so that every square foot of your yard receives consistent, even water.
When heads are spaced too far apart, the center of the coverage gap dries out. When they are spaced too close together, you get oversaturation and wasted water. Measure Your Lawn and Create a Scaled Drawing
You cannot place heads effectively if you are guessing at distances. Before anything else, measure your yard and sketch it to scale on graph paper or a digital layout tool. Capture the full perimeter of each lawn area, the location of beds, walkways, patios, trees, fences, and the position of your outdoor water supply.
Once you have an accurate drawing, you can mark out sprinkler head positions, draw coverage circles, and spot gaps or overlaps before a single trench is dug. Doing this on paper first saves hours of adjustment work later.


Place Heads in the Corners and Perimeter First
Start at the edges, not the middle. The corners and perimeter of your lawn are where coverage is hardest to achieve and where dry spots most commonly appear. Place a head in each corner of the area, then space additional heads along each side at intervals that match the throw radius of the head you are using.
For example, if you are using a spray head with a 10 foot radius, space perimeter heads approximately 10 feet apart so each head reaches the next. After the perimeter is covered, work inward to fill the interior with heads that complete your head to head coverage grid.
Match the Head Type to the Area Shape and Size
The shape and size of each area you are watering should determine which sprinkler head you choose and where you place it.
For large, open rectangular or square lawn areas, rotors are the right tool. Keep Heads Away From Hardscapes, Beds, and Obstacles
Every sprinkler head should be placed so its spray pattern stays on the intended surface. Heads too close to a sidewalk or driveway will throw water onto concrete, which is not just wasteful, it creates slip hazards and contributes to runoff that never reaches your lawn.
Position heads so their spray stops just short of hardscaped edges. Use half circle and quarter circle nozzles along straight borders so water stays inside the lawn boundary. Along garden beds, keep spray heads placed so water does not saturate mulched bed areas. Better yet, handle garden beds with a separate drip zone entirely, keeping overhead spray confined to the lawn and drip delivery in the beds.
Keep heads clear of large shrubs and trees that can interrupt spray patterns. As plants grow, their canopy can block water from reaching the turf below, so account for mature plant size in your planning, not just the size plants are today.


Account for Slope and Soil Type
Slope changes where water lands and how quickly it moves. On sloped areas, water runs downhill before it soaks in, which means the upper portion of the slope can stay dry while the lower portion gets oversaturated. Address this with shorter run times, higher frequency cycles, and by positioning heads at the top of the slope to compensate for runoff.
Soil type matters too. Sandy soils drain quickly and need more frequent watering cycles. Clay soils absorb water slowly and are prone to runoff if run times are too long. In clay areas, use cycle and soak programming in your Rain Bird controller to water in shorter bursts with time between cycles for absorption. Head placement on clay soil lawns should account for the fact that overspray near low points will pool, so keep spacing tighter and run times shorter.


Check Coverage With a Test Run Before You Backfill
Before you close up your trenches, run each zone with heads at grade and walk the coverage. Look for dry spots between heads, areas where water is missing the lawn, spray hitting fences or structures, and heads that are not performing at full output due to pressure problems.
Adjust head positions, swap nozzle sizes, or add additional heads where gaps exist. It is far easier to correct placement now than after the system is fully installed and the lawn is growing over the top.
